Attraction
Have you ever heard of “The Law of Attraction?”
Simply put “The Law of Attraction” is the philosophical belief that positive thoughts can bring positive results into a person's life.
The Power of Attraction in Discovering Purpose
One of the greatest needs we face in life is the need for purpose. It’s why we often find ourselves chasing after things that resemble purpose but are not truly a part of our destiny. We are naturally drawn to what we lack, and being disconnected from our true purpose can lead us to try to fulfill this need through the wrong means.
Attraction can be a powerful way to uncover purpose. The things we are drawn to often complement who we are or who we aspire to be. Our attractions may even reflect aspects of our life purpose. However, this doesn’t mean we always interpret these attractions correctly. That’s why examining our hearts and intentions is so crucial.
For example, you might find yourself attracted to someone doing something you’ve always wanted to do. This doesn’t necessarily mean you’re meant to form a personal relationship with them. Instead, they might serve as a source of inspiration or guidance. It’s easy to confuse attraction with romance because both involve an internal pull that isn’t immediately visible. Mismanaging this pull can lead us into situations where we try to fulfill our need for purpose through romantic connections. It’s not wrong to feel drawn to someone; the issue lies in misunderstanding the role that person is meant to play in your life.
Reflection as a Tool for Purpose
Reflection is another powerful way to locate your purpose. Often, what we’re drawn to acts as a mirror, reflecting the potential that is already growing within us. In essence, we are in seed form, and the people or situations we gravitate toward may serve as water to nurture that seed.
For instance, someone you admire might represent an aspect of your own purpose that is still developing. However, attempting to turn that admiration into a friendship or romantic relationship can sometimes hinder you from fully embracing the deeper purpose behind your connection.
Purpose Is Personal
Purpose is deeply personal—a journey between you and God. No human being can give you purpose. Others may help you see aspects of yourself or inspire your journey, but only you can discover your life’s true calling.
We often see people thriving in their purpose and assume we’re meant to connect with them because we share similar interests. But we overlook the fact that we may not know their character or maturity beyond their gift or role. Attraction to their external success might blind us to the reality that our true need lies elsewhere. It’s like trying to meet an internal need with an external solution, which can never truly satisfy.
A Personal Journey
I’ve always yearned to find my purpose. In my early twenties, I thought marriage was the answer—a way to define my identity. While there’s nothing wrong with marrying young, I now see that I was still in the process of discovering myself. I don’t regret marriage, as it has played a significant role in shaping who I am today. As Dr. Myles Munroe wisely noted, “Purpose is fulfilled in phases.” It’s not a single destination but an ongoing journey of growth and discovery.
Ultimately, uncovering purpose requires looking within, rather than searching for it externally. Otherwise, we risk running in circles, chasing fleeting attractions that have little to do with our true calling.
